What is the best tennis racket for beginners?

As a beginner, it's important to choose a racket that is easy to play and forgiving. Here are some guidelines depending on who you are:

  • Men : Racket with a hitting surface around 100 square inches, weight around 300 g (+/- 20 g) and grip size 3 (or 2 for smaller hands).
  • Women : Racket with a hitting surface around 100 square inches, weight around 280 g (+/- 20 g) and grip size 2 (or 1 for smaller hands).
  • Junior : Lighter racket with a weight of approximately 270 g (+/- 20 g) and grip size 1 or 2.

A racket with a wide frame width gives extra speed and helps you get a good ball hit. As a beginner, a lighter racket is recommended, but it should not be too light as this can increase the risk of arm and wrist injuries.

How do I choose the right tennis shoes for my playing style?

Choosing the right tennis shoes is crucial for both comfort and performance on the court. The right fit reduces the risk of chafing and injury, while providing better stability and freedom of movement. Here are some important factors to consider when choosing tennis shoes:

Find the right size and fit

  • Measure your foot from heel to big toe and compare with the manufacturer's size chart.
  • Leave about a finger's width in front of the toes to give your foot room for quick movements.
  • Try the shoes on in the afternoon or evening when your feet are most swollen to ensure the right fit during longer gaming sessions.

Adapt to your foot shape

  • Low, normal or high arch? Choose a shoe with the right arch support for extra stability.
  • Wide or narrow feet? Look for models that offer different width options for the best comfort.

Choose shoes according to your playing style and surface

  • Baseline players (a lot of lateral movement) → Choose shoes with extra support and durable soles.
  • All-round player (varied game) → A balanced shoe with good cushioning and flexibility is best.
  • Fast and aggressive playing style → Light and responsive shoes that provide good grip and agility.

Test and adapt as needed

  • Try different brands and models to find the best fit.
  • If necessary, insoles can be used for extra support and comfort.

By choosing the right tennis shoes adapted to your foot and playing style, you will both get a better playing experience and reduce the risk of injury.

How do I know when it's time to restring my tennis racket?

The strings are a crucial part of your tennis racket, affecting both power, control and feel in the game. Although the frame lasts for years, the strings wear out and lose their elasticity over time. Restringing at the right time can make a big difference to your game.

When should you change strings?

How often you should re-string depends on how much you play:

  • Do you play regularly (several times a week)? Strictly every three months is recommended.
  • Do you play less often? A guideline is to re-string as many times per year as you play per week (e.g. if you play twice a week, change strings at least twice a year).
  • Do you feel like your racket has lost feel, power or control? Then it's time to change!

Hard or soft stringing – what suits you?

  • More power? Stiff strings help you generate more speed on the ball.
  • More control? Softer strings provide better precision and feel.
  • Not sure? A string of 24–26 kg is suitable for most players.

What is the difference between different tennis balls?

Tennis balls may seem similar, but there are big differences in quality, bounce and durability. Choosing the right ball can affect both your training and match performance. Here we go over the most important differences!

Beginner or junior? Try Play & Stay balls

If you are new to the tennis court or a younger player, regular balls may feel too fast. Green Dot balls have lower pressure, making them 20% slower and easier to control. These balls come in a variety of speeds, so you can gradually adjust to standard balls.

The quality of the blanket affects the game

A ball with a good layer of felt provides better feel and control when hitting the ball. The felt also helps create more spin, which is useful for twisting shots and stopping balls. Worn balls without much felt provide less control and are more difficult to play with.

Unpressurized vs. pressurized tennis balls – what's the difference?

  • Pressurized balls – Have higher bounce and better feel but lose pressure and performance after a period of use. Perfect for match play and higher level training.
  • Pressureless balls – Have longer durability and maintain their bounce over time, but can feel slightly heavier to play with. Perfect for training and beginners who want durable balls.

Choose well-known brands for better quality

When it comes to tennis balls, you often get what you pay for. Brands like Head, RS, Babolat, and Wilson are known for their high quality and durability.

Test yourself to find the right ball

The best way to find the right tennis ball for your game is to try different models. Luckily, tennis balls are relatively inexpensive, so it's easy to experiment until you find a favorite!

I want to start playing tennis, what do I need?

Getting started playing tennis doesn't require much, but the right equipment makes a big difference to your playing experience. Here's a guide to what you need:

Tennis racket – find the right model for you

Your racket is the most important tool on the court. As a beginner, you should choose a racket with:

  • Large hitting surface (approx. 100 square inches) – provides better control and accuracy.
  • Light weight (270–300 grams) – makes it easier to handle and swing.
  • Correct grip size – Adjust to your hand size. If unsure, choose a smaller size and adjust with grip wraps.

Tennis shoes – stability and grip

Tennis shoes differ from regular training shoes by providing better grip and support for quick movements on the court.

  • Lateral stability – Reduces the risk of sprains.
  • Custom sole – Choose the right sole depending on whether you play on clay, hard court or grass.
  • Good fit – Should sit firmly but allow room for foot movement.

Workout clothes – freedom of movement and comfort

Choose clothes that are suitable for movement and sweat. Tennis clothing is often made of functional materials that breathe and dry quickly.

  • Shorts or skirt with pockets – Handy for storing extra balls.
  • T-shirt or tank top – Light and airy material provides comfort during the game.
  • Socks with good cushioning – Reduces the risk of chafing and provides support.

Accessories that make the game smoother

  • Grip wraps – For better grip and comfort on the racket.
  • Headband or sweatband – Keeps sweat away from the face and hands.
  • Tennis bag or backpack – For easy transportation of the racket and equipment.
  • Water bottle – Essential for staying hydrated during the game.

With the right equipment, starting to play tennis becomes both easier and more fun. We at Percys Tennisshop are happy to help you find the right racket, shoes and accessories for a good start!
